Seeking Justice for Immigrants
The Immigrant Coalition of Faith in Indiana
Faith in Indiana believes in the American promise of freedom and opportunity. Since our founding, the Immigrant Coalition of Faith in Indiana has been a powerful vehicle to advance immigrant justice in Indiana.
We’ve long advocated for a pathway to citizenship for all 11 million undocumented immigrants. We’ve anchored efforts to win the DREAM Act in Congress, and then protect the DACA Program. We’ve worked to dismantle the mass deportation machine that separates families winning campaigns to end ICE detainers in Marion, Allen, and St. Joseph Counties. We’ve promoted city-ID programs in Plymouth and Indianapolis, IN. We’ve worked with community partners to beat back private prison plans to build immigrant jails in Elkhart, Newton, and Clay Counties. As the pandemic devastated front-line immigrant workers -we worked with the Mayor of our Capital city, Indianapolis, to secure over $425 Million dollars in rental relief funds open to all residents, regardless of immigration status. The largest and only fund of its kind in the state.
Faith in Indiana has a long history of partnering with the Catholic Church, the religious home to two-thirds of Indiana’s immigrants, to advance immigrant justice. Responding to rising anti-immigrant hate and the surge in deportations separating families we partnered to launch the Catholic Accompaniment and Reflection Experience (CARE). Through the program, we created a hotline and trained hundreds of volunteers as rapid responders to stand in solidarity with people threatened by ICE or law enforcement. Our work to accompany our neighbors at ICE check-ins and court hearings resulted in families being reunited and shined the light on the inhumane treatment of mass deportation on our families.
Our hearts are warmed by this message from Pope Francis to our delegation to the US World Meeting of Popular Movements co-hosted by Faith in Action.
The immigrant coalition of Faith in Indiana is a national movement leader in the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) and the Faith for Liberation program of Faith in Action.
